Nouf Semari

Nouf Semari grew up in Dhahran, the eastern region of Saudi Arabia, and graduated from King Faisal University. She is a self-taught painter who weaves layered narratives within her works with an often playful tone.

Semari has been exhibiting her work since 2010 throughout the Gulf at galleries such as Ayyam Co Community Art & in Dubai and Alriwaq in Bahrain. In 2014, she was the winner of the Clyde Project and in April 2017, she completed the Majlis Studio Residency program in New York, an initiative of King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture.
She wants to create paintings that are impossible to walk past, paintings that grab and hold your attention. The more you look at it the more satisfying it becomes for the viewer and as much time you give to the painting, the more it gives you back. As you have your own conversation with it.
While creating, Nouf says "I often try not using the terms "figurative" and "abstract" in describing what I do because I've always tried to have it both ways. I want the experience of looking at any of my paintings to be similar to the process of making the painting - you go from the big picture to something very intense and detailed and then back again. What I look for is that my painting can imitate life. I want the experience of looking at it to be very much like the experience of walking through the world and experiencing it all to the end."
